US Expat Tax Deadlines: Every Date That Matters

By the eTaxNexus Research Desk3 minute readReviewed: August 2026
Key Takeaways
  • Expats get an automatic filing extension to June 15 — but tax owed is still due April 15.
  • FBAR is due April 15 with an automatic extension to October 15 — no request needed.
  • Interest accrues from April 15 on any unpaid balance, extension or not.

The US tax calendar you remember from home doesn’t transfer cleanly abroad. Expats get extra time in some places, none in others, and a few deadlines most Americans have never heard of. Here’s the full picture.

April 15 — Payment Day (Yes, Still)

The most misunderstood date. Even though expats get more time to file, any tax you owe is still due April 15. Interest starts accruing on unpaid balances from this date regardless of extensions. If you expect to owe, estimate and pay by April 15 even if your return comes later.

April 15 is also the deadline for prior-year IRA contributions and the first quarterly estimated payment of the new year.

June 15 — The Automatic Expat Extension

If your tax home and residence are outside the US on April 15, you automatically get until June 15 to file. No form, no request — you simply attach a statement to your return noting you qualify. This two-month grace also applies to paying without the late-payment penalty (though interest still runs from April 15).

October 15 — The Requested Extension

Need more time? File Form 4868 (by June 15 for expats) and your filing deadline moves to October 15. This is routine and penalty-free as long as you’ve paid what you owe. Expats with complex foreign reporting use it constantly — foreign tax documents often arrive far later than US ones.

Beyond October: expats can request a further discretionary extension to December 15 by writing to the IRS — useful in genuinely complicated years, but don’t rely on it as a plan.

FBAR: Its Own Calendar

The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) is technically due April 15 but carries an automatic extension to October 15 for everyone. In practice: file it with or before your return, through FinCEN’s e-filing system — it never attaches to your 1040.

Quarterly Estimated Payments

Self-employed abroad, or earning income without US withholding? Estimated payments are due roughly April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. Miss them and you’ll meet the underpayment penalty — small, but entirely avoidable.

The Practical Expat Calendar

  • April 15 — pay any estimated balance due; Q1 estimate; IRA contribution deadline.
  • June 15 — automatic expat filing deadline; Q2 estimate; file Form 4868 if you need October.
  • September 15 — Q3 estimate.
  • October 15 — extended return deadline; FBAR final deadline.
  • January 15 — Q4 estimate.
